Our Commitment To The Community

Picture

My name is Steve Williams. For the last decade many have called me, “Mr. Williams”. Since I was a child, I have always wanted to be a scientist or a teacher. How fitting is it that I became a science teacher?! My passion for science and math has taken me in and out of classrooms all up and down the east coast. From a small parochial school in Oswego County, to out-of-state charter schools, to one of the largest public school districts in New York State, I’ve taught K-12 learners STEM with a passion that ignites! I started Highkey Science with a Lowkey Scientist as a local community based organization with the mission of bringing the best parts of the classroom back into the community. Now, more than ever, it is important to take the gaps in education (especially with the worldwide pandemic) and fill the learning void with fun project-based learning.

Highkey Science and your favorite teacher (Mr. Williams!) believe in learning while leaving the traditional A through F grading systems behind and shifting how we as a community measure mastery and success! This is me, a Lowkey Scientist, working to better serve our community by sharing my love of learning and passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics. Join me in engaging and empowering the youth of our community with Highkey Science!

Cortland Community Matters Fair
The Cortland Community Matters Fair (CCMF) is an annual fair that celebrates the character of the City of Cortland. As its name suggests, the CCMF is a community fair organized by April Beatty and a committee of volunteers in order to remind our neighborhoods that they matter. This year’s even was held on September 6th, 2020 at Suggett Park in Cortland, NY. This event is a free day of inclusive fun brought to you by numerous community-based sponsors including Highkey Science. This year we set up a STEM Tent where about 200 kids made, shook, and took their own cup of stretchy and stringy slime. Some even added LEGOs, glittery, shapes, stones, and more to make their slime unique! Wee look forward to supporting the Cortland Community Matters fair again in 2021

Black Business Appreciation Day
Black Business Appreciation Day is a day to recognize and appreciate the contributions of BIPOC (black indigenous people of color) business owners and operators within the City of Cortland. This day was first organized by Jeff Smith (a community stakeholder) and organized by Darris McDowell & The Squeeze Juice Bar in Cortland, NY to connect BIPOC people with BIPOC businesses as well as a way to showcase a variety of products and services to the community that are offered by BIPOC businesses. This years Black Business Appreciation Day was recognized by the Mayor of the City of Cortland (Brian Tobin) and the President and CEO of the Cortland County Chamber of Commerce (Bob Haight.) There were several award recipients in 2020 including Highkey Science for their work and efforts in owning and operating a black-owned business in a predominantly white community.

The Annual back to School Supply Giveaway at The Squeeze
The Annual Back to School Supply Giveaway is brought to the Cortland community by The Squeeze Juice Bar and Ty’s Cuisine. Every year this event gives back to the community by collecting and donating bookbags, pencils, pens, and other school supplies. With the uncertainty of the 2020-21 school year, Highkey Science was excited to be in attendance to help organize and manage this first come, first serve event. We are looking forward to being a contributing sponsor for the 2021-22 back to school season!
